It was founded in 1943 and consisted of about 1000 people that either were volunteers or prisoners. The bataillon was put in to action during the last years of war in the Balkan.

The unit became famous through the daring attempt to smash the leadership of the Jugoslawian communist partisans around Tito in a commandoaction.(?Operation Rösselsprung?) The SS-parachutebataillon also played a very important role in the occupation of Budapest by the Wehrmacht in the "Case Margarethe" in spring 1944.
