Königsberg was the royal capital and residence city of Prussia until 1724, then provincial capital in the Prussian state. After several devastating British air strikes largely destroyed in 1944, the city fell to the Rote Amee in April 1945. In 1946 the former German city became part of the Russian Soviet Republic with the name Kalingrad. In Cyrillic form Калининград.
